Tracking an iPhone is one thing and finding it is another. Find My iPhone app has been one of the best features Apple has created for its OS, the feature lets you Find iPhone that has been stolen or lost. If you want to track your iPhone here’s how you can do it with the Find My app, formally Find My iPhone and Find My Friends. With iOS 15, iPhone users will be able to track their iPhone even when the phone is turned off or have no internet connection.
We know the feeling after buying an iPhone and just barely two weeks the phone was misplaced, or probably stolen. It’s a pain if you have important information on your local storage. If you want to track your child’s lost iPhone you can start by asking your child to turn on family location sharing, or you can use the Find My app or icloud.com/find.
To find a lost iPhone is easy with the new iOS 15, even when the data connection is turned off, or the device is shut down. If your device isn’t connected to a network you can still track an iPhone with Find My iPhone. But if you’re certain that you won’t be getting your phone back, you can erase the device to remove all of your personal information.
The Find My iPhone feature allows you to easily track any Apple lost device, you can lock or erase the device so that no one will be able to access it. You can add AirPod to the Find My app to be able to find it before is lost. How to turn on Find My iPhone
You need to turn on Find My iPhone before the device is misplaced or stolen as the case always seems to fall here. If you don’t enable Find My iPhone and your device gets lost, you won’t be tracking your iPhone.
Update your iPhone
If you want to be able to find your iPhone when the power is turned off, or it’s shut down you’ll need to update your iPhone to iOS 15 or newer. This is the only way to know where your iPhone is when it’s powered down.
To update to the latest version: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If iOS 15 isn’t installed, you’ll have to update. And you’ll only be able to track newer iPhone devices, from iPhone 11 and newer. iPhone X and older can’t be tracked even with iOS 15.
1. Open your iPhone settings, and tap on your name at the top of the settings page.
3. Tap on Find My, and toggle on Find My iPhone. Enable Send Last Location, and Find My Network.
This feature will send you your phone’s last location to your iCloud account before the battery dies. So, once your iPhone is stolen you have it all set up and then you can find your lost iPhone.
If you’ve other Apple devices paired to your iPhone, like AirTag, Watch, or AirPods, you’ll be able to track it if you can’t find the device.
How to track lost iPhone
Perhaps your iPhone goes missing you can quickly track it since you’ve already turned on Find My Device. If you’ve another Apple device with you can use it to find your device with the Find My app or you can go to icloud.com/find.
How to track iPhone with another iPhone
If you have another device, maybe a second iPhone or an iPad that uses the same Apple ID on the missing iPhone you can use it to find an iPhone.
1. Open the Find My app. Then sign in to your Apple ID account — and this should be the same account that you’re logged into on your lost iPhone.
2. Tap on the Devices tab, and a map will pop up with a list of more than one device ready to be found. Select the device that’s missing.
3. Here, you’ll see where your iPhone is on the map. Use the map controls to pan around and zoom in on the phone’s location, just as you would in any mapping application.
4. Once you click on the missing iPhone, three action buttons will appear: the Play Sound, Enable Lost Mode, and Erase Phone.
If the iPhone is close by, you can play a sound even if it’s muted. If you know the phone is around your home or working place, you can quickly do that, but if it’s not, there’s no need to and instead, you can set it lost mode.
Once your device is missing you need to enable Lost Mode, tap on Lost Mode to make sure it’s locked down. And you’ll need to provide some information to enable someone to contact you if the phone is found. You’ll enter a reachable contact number, and then click on Next, and type a short message to see the phone and click Done.
The lock screen of the iPhone will display the message and phone number you choose, along with a button that lets someone call that number. You can update the phone number and lock screen message at any time via icloud.com or the iOS app.
If you know for certain that you won’t be getting your iPhone back you should erase your device to prevent your personal information from being in the hands of an intruder. You wouldn’t want your payment information and other vitals to be available on the device.
How to track a lost iPhone with iCloud.com
If you’re using a friend or family iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or Windows device to track your iPhone, you’ll have to use icloud.com/find. This way, it will be easy for you to locate the iPhone from any device. You just need a web browser to find your iPhone, sign in with your Apple ID and password to get started.
2. Click on the Find iPhone icon, and click on the All Devices at the top. If you’ve connected more than one device to the Find My app, select the device that’s missing (that’s if you have sign-in to multiple devices with your Apple ID account).
3. Use the map controls to pan around and zoom in on the phone’s location, just as you would in any mapping application.
4. You’ll see the action you need to take for your device: You can Play Sound, Enable Lost Mode, and Erase the Phone.
You can also opt-in to receive email updates when the device moves. Find My iPhone will also track the device’s movements as long as Lost Mode is active.
Don’t go knocking on someone door
Once you’ve successfully tracked your iPhone, and you know the location, don’t just go over there and start knocking on the door of someone you don’t even know, you might get missing too. So instead tell the local authorities or the police to assist you in getting your device back.
