WhatsApp will completely stop running on some smartphone that has an older OS. From 2021, WhatsApp says all iPhone currently running iOS 9 below won’t be able to run WhatsApp except of course the user update the device to the new OS version. For Android, it will only run on Android 4.0.4 and newer.
Last year, WhatsApp did the same thing by ending support for the windows phone and iPhone with iOS 8 or lower, plus Android phone running version 2.4.7 or older.
The company always end support for older OS every year for the smartphone to be compatible with WhatsApp new features and updates — so, they recommend users to use the latest version of their operating system.
The messaging app will also stop working on several Android and iOS phones from 2021. And this action was led by the company — that the new development for WhatsApp is not supported by earlier OS of iPhone and Android — and, it won’t be able to handle feature update.
According to the WhatsApp FAQ section, Android phones running on Android 4.0.3 and lower as well as iPhone running on iOS 9 and lower will not be compatible with the chat app from 2021.
All iPhone models from the iPhone 4 will lose support for the iPhone. This means that those who are using the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S will need to update their operating system to iOS 9 or newer to continue using WhatsApp.
For Android, WhatsApp will stop working on the Android version earlier than 4.0.3. Android smartphone running on an older version may lose support for WhatsApp because they’re unable to update to a new OS. So, it up to the users to get a new device.

- Android users can go to Settings > System > About Phone to see which Android version their smartphone is running on.
